The Pros and Cons of Mobile Automotive Repair as the Tech

The Pros and Cons of Mobile Automotive Repair:

After doing mobile work fulltime for the past 6 months, I thought I would put together some of my favorite, and not so favorite parts about being a mobile automotive mechanic.

One of the biggest changes for me since leaving a shop environment was becoming more than just the person fixing the car. I also became the service manager, salesperson, and marketing agent all at the same time, so it was a lot to take in.

In doing so, I now get to meet and interact with all my clients instead of being stuck back in the shop all day. Being mobile, you are alone a lot, so I definitely miss having other guys around to joke with and learn from.

Being able to control my schedule more, as well as help out my clients in the process is often.

I have fleet customers who set up multiple vehicles per appointment, then I just go do all the work at their yard after hours, so then I get to take the day hours off and spend it with my family or get other stuff done.

I have other clients who like things done bright and early, so they keep me awake and on my toes, which then usually leads to an early afternoon unless more jobs come on the same day.

Not having access to certain shop equipment can suck, but it has definitely taught me to think outside the box and be prepared for situations that I would not have normally thought about.

The biggest thing missing is the lift. Not having a lift does prevent me from doing certain jobs. It’s not that they can’t be done without a lift, but to be done right and done efficiently, sometimes it is best to have certain equipment such as a lift/specialty tool/press etc.

The weather can make for a beautiful day, or a miserable day, so I have learned a few tricks to control how it affects me, but sometimes you cannot escape certain elements. Being in Colorado, sometimes we get hit with a storm that moves in and makes a mess without more than 10minutes of warning, so that can be a disappointing surprise if you’re in the middle of diagnosing or repairing a vehicle.

I love knowing I can provide a convenient service to people at their home/office, and also educate them on their vehicle and it’s operations in the process. Throughout my career working for different dealerships, I have always pushed towards providing quality service, and it is nice now that I can take that outside the box and offer a new experience. I have gained inspiration watching a few other mobile mechanics, but doing it for myself is an awesome feeling for sure!

Shout out to all my awesome clients who make it possible!
