Winterizing your Vehicle
Winterizing Your Vehicle:
Simple steps that you can use to prevent problems
It’s that time of year again when the seasons are changing and the cold weather is creeping in. We all know that usually means a few extra problems with our vehicles. So it is always best to check things over and have a head start to make sure you are not left out in the cold somewhere.
The more common issues we see in the winter are battery/starting system issues, and coolant/overheating issues.
When it gets cold enough, it puts an extra load on the battery and starting system. Batteries are rated for CCA-Cold Cranking Amps. When it gets cold and a battery is getting weak, then it will have an issue providing the cranking amperage that is needed to get the engine turning. Most batteries seem to be good for 3-5years and will usually have a time stamp on them.
“If you are unsure about the age/condition of your battery then you can take it to most parts stores to be tested for you free of charge.”
The next priority is the cooling system.
If your cooling system is low on antifreeze it can cause overheating issues when running, or worst case if it’s cold enough the engine block can begin to freeze and develop damage if there is no antifreeze in it. So be sure to check the coolant/antifreeze level in your vehicle before anything happens.
It can go from a quick fix to a very expensive repair if you do not keep it filled up and free of leaks.
“Radiator and cooling system hoses are known to start splitting when they get too cold/old, so be sure to check the condition of all the cooling system hoses and replace as necessary.”
Next up is Fluids. You want to make sure your fluids are level and in good condition as well.
Fluids to check: Engine oil, Transmission oil, Power Steering Fluid(if equipped), and Brake fluid. Low fluids can be something that is easily overlooked but can result in catastrophic failures, so be sure to keep things at the proper level.
One of the final and most important checks on the vehicle is going to be the Tires, along with the steering and suspension systems.
If you do not have the right tires for the conditions, or if your tread is getting low then it can be very dangerous to drive around in snowy/icy conditions.
So ALWAYS be sure your tires are in good condition before getting on the road. Be sure you keep the pressures adjusted correctly as well. If one tire is low it can cause a tire pull, which can be very dangerous when the driving conditions are already compromised.
Gabriel,
Man, this will be a lifesaver! I have three kids who know nothing about cars. They are always relying on dad to get them straight when something goes wrong! I am sharing this with them so they can hopefully figure some of these things out on their own.
I can use what you have in the service information tab all the time. It is so broad and covers most of your typical mechanical issues.
You have a great thing going here! Keep up the good work!

Hello there!
That is a very nice and unique article you have there. It is most helpful considering the season we are approaching. Winter is here already and if it’s not well managed, vehicles could end up getting damaged due to th nature of the season. This article is coming at the right time because it will help people prevent problems that could occur with their vehicles due to Winter.
Thanks
